How to Honor a Publicist

A couple weeks ago we celebrated the career of our former Corporate Publicist Mavis Sanders. Mavis retired from Tyndale after nearly 40 years in Christian publishing, with almost 15 of those years being at Tyndale. Here in Tyndale PR we like to call Mavis “The Rockstar,” so that’s exactly how we decided to send her off. If you’re wondering how to honor a publicist who’s going into retirement, this is one way to do it. All the amazing photos you see below were done by our very own Stephen Vosloo.

Step 1: Get a red carpet and go Hollywood.

We rented a red carpet for this special occasion.

The image you see on the screen is us ambushing Mavis in her office and broadcasting it into the chapel via Skype. She had no idea what we were doing for her party, so we captured her reactions live on camera for all to see.

Mavis got her own Hollywood star.

Step 2: Get some paparazzi to capture the big entrance.

Mavis and Tyndale CEO Mark Taylor

Paparazzi bombarded Mavis with flashing cameras as she came down the stairs. We created this “step and repeat” set-up so Mavis could get some red carpet photos before her big entrance. We also gave her the boa and tiara to wear for the occasion.

Every publicist needs her own logo.

Step 3: Get a former Bulls announcer to record the intro for the red carpet entrance.

Mavis is loving it!

Our Senior Public Relations Manager Todd Starowitz used his connections to get the Bulls announcer from the Jordan years to record Mavis’ entrance announcement.

Pure joy.

Step 4: Hold a press conference.

We had several reporters who were eager to ask Mavis questions about her career–including her rumored romance with Fabio, what she’s going to do after retiring, and her favorite Tyndale memories.

The Press Box

Some of you faithful blog readers may recognize Adam Sabados as the reporter in the photo above.

Step 5: Have lots of food and fond memories.

We had a short video with greetings for Mavis from authors and industry personnel followed by a few of Mavis’ own remarks. Then of course we had lots of cake!

The board above is a bunch of magazine covers Alan Huizenga, the Director of Marketing Services, created with photos of Mavis over the years. The Time, Vogue, and People covers were some of our favorites.

Tyndale PR plus Alan

We all miss Mavis’ presence here in Tyndale PR. We’ve all learned so much from her and the wealth of experience she brought to our department. She is a wonderful friend and colleague to all of us and we wish her the best in retirement.

Releasing November 2011 (Tyndale House Publishers, $22.99, 978-1-4143-7055-2, 256 pages), LEAD . . . for God’s Sake is a story about Steve Rocker, one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in Kentucky’s history. About to enter a season with enormous expectations, Rocker’s players have lost their will to win and their passion for the game. None of Coach Rocker’s tried and true motivational methods are working, and he doesn’t know why.

As the season continues to spiral downward and his home life begins to mirror the problems he is facing on the court, Coach Rocker stumbles upon a most unlikely mentor—Joe Taylor, the school’s janitor—who seems to have the answers to all of Coach’s problems. Joe helps Coach turn his season around and reconnect not only with his players, but with his wife and children as well. Joe ultimately helps Coach realize that his true purpose in life is not to win games, set records, or achieve personal acclaim—but rather to influence others by leading from the heart.

LEAD . . . for God’s Sake! is both a fast-paced read and a book that leaders will wish to revisit again and again. It will ultimately help readers recognize what must be understood in order to be a truly effective leader. If you often ask yourself, “Why do I do what I do?” this book is for you.

About the Author: Todd Gongwer has spent nearly 20 years developing his expertise in leadership, team, and cultural dynamics. He has held executive positions in companies ranging from entrepreneurial start-ups to public entities. He also served as an assistant college basketball coach for more than a decade. He lives in Indiana with his wife, Traci, and their two children.
