Black Friday and Cyber Monday are come and gone, but most of us still have plenty of shopping left to do. There are lots of readers on my Christmas shopping list this year, and some of them prefer e-books. E-books are a little harder to wrap up and put under the tree, but a few e-booksellers have made them easy to give. Whether you’re stocking an e-reader or tablet that will be opened on Christmas morning or filling someone’s already-loved e-reader, there are lots of ways to give e-books as gifts.
Amazon will let you give any e-book as a gift, and they even let you specify the delivery date. If you want to make sure your loved ones get their gift notification on Christmas morning, just set the delivery date for 12/25!
Just choose “Give as a Gift” on the product page instead of “Buy now..”
Barnes & Noble
If you look next to the “Buy Now” button on any B&N product page, you’ll see a little present icon with a “Buy As Gift” option…
This will give you a pop-up window that lets you enter the recipients name, email address, and a message. You can also specify the delivery date for Christmas Day or maybe a future birthday by clicking “Edit” next to “Date: Today.”
Apple added the ability to send e-books as gifts in the second week of December! To buy an Apple e-book as a gift, launch iTunes on your computer. Search the title of the book you’d like to give, and then click the down arrow next to the “Buy Book” button. This should give you a list of options. Choose the first one, “Gift this book.”
This brings up a window where you enter the email address of the recipient, and then write a short message. Like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, Apple let’s you designate a delivery date for the gift.
The next step is kinda fun: Apple lets you choose a theme for your gift! This just affects the email that the gift recipient sees.
The last step is to confirm your purchase.
Other vendors, like Christianbook.com and Kobo don’t have the capability to let you give e-books as gifts, but most e-booksellers do have gift certificates that you can print out or buy from a brick-and-mortar store. I like to print out the book cover of the intended books, wrap them up with the gift card, and use them as stocking stuffers.
Right now, we’ve got several e-books on sale. If you’re buying any friends or loved ones an e-reader or tablet for Christmas, this is a great time to buy e-books and fill up those e-readers!
