The Aetherlight Bible: Combining God’s Word with Gaming

Aetherlight game image

Where does God’s Word fit in a gaming world? “Right in the middle of it!” says Tyndale House Publishers and Scarlet City Studios. The two organizations have formed an exciting partnership to bring the gospel story to young gamers. Tyndale’s new Aetherlight Bible releases this summer and is built around themes from the new action-adventure online game The Aetherlight: Chronicles of the Resistance.

“Tyndale House grew out of the efforts of Dr. Kenneth Taylor as he worked to make God’s Word accessible to his children,” said Blaine A. Smith, associate publisher at Tyndale House Publishers. “For over fifty years, Tyndale has been focused on providing innovative ways for people to connect to God’s Word. This new partnership with Scarlet City Studios enables us to engage children in a game environment with the truth of Scripture. We are excited to join with Scarlet City Studios to create this Bible and help parents engage with their kids in an environment they understand.”

The Aetherlight: Chronicles of the Resistance is the first digital engagement experience of its kind. The Entertainment Software Association reports that 59 percent of Americans play video games and more than 50 percent of US households have at least two gaming consoles. In only four years the gaming industry has seen an increase in sales of more than 200 percent. The Aetherlight game aims to help young people see their stories in the context of God’s story via a world that is grounded in the biblical narrative. The companion Bible will help families build upon the bridge between the game’s allegory and the words of Scripture. Through different media forms, Tyndale House Publishers and Scarlet City Studios are bringing God’s Word into this unique market.

The Aetherlight: Chronicles of the Resistance is more than a game,” said Tim Cleary, Scarlet City Studios’ Aetherlight world builder. “It’s an immersive experience that, carefully balancing theology and theatrics, brings to life the biblical narrative for a digital generation. It connects Scripture and real-life application through the world of Aethasia as a high-quality, state-of-the-art game that allows players to experience the mission of God in Scripture for themselves. It’s fantastic, then, to be able to offer a physical, tactile Bible to match this rich experience.”

The Aetherlight Bible pairs the timeless truth of the Bible with full-color inserts, unique footnotes, and exclusive game art. Connecting the dots between the game’s allegory and the grand narrative of Scripture, The Aetherlight Bible will help young people engage with God’s story in a fresh way and encourage them to explore their own part in the adventure.

The clear and easy-to-understand New Living Translation is perfectly matched to the needs of young readers. Alongside unique game-based content, it allows young people to immerse themselves in this story, seeing the echoes of Scripture in their Aethasian adventures, and draws an online generation back into the Word.

Father’s Day Week: Reviews From Kids

When our books or Bibles get reviewed we see tons of magazines, newspapers, and blog links.  Every once in awhile we get some really creative, unique reviews, and we can’t help but share them.  Because it’s the week of Father’s Day, it’s fitting to show how one father helped his kids share their love of their Bibles with the world.

Joel, our friend from the blog The Church of Jesus Christ, recently sat down with his daughter and son and had them talk about the new Bibles they’ve been enjoying.  Here’s a shot of the Bibles his family takes to church on Sundays.

"The NLT-Only Family Goes to Church"

It was great to see the Mosaic Bible in the mix; it’s the Bible I’ve been carrying to church lately.

Here’s Abigael  talking about her Girls Life Application Study Bible (with a little coaching from Mom and Dad). My favorite part is hearing the future NLT user in the background; she is already enthusiastically trying to participate in discussion of the Bible.

Here’s Landon talking about his Metal Bible NLT: Camouflage.   It was cool to see him go to talk about what was in the Bible first, before he thought to talk about the cool camouflage cover. Joel cracks me up at the end.

Joel also reviewed these two Bibles on his blog, The Church of Jesus Christ.  I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if you followed him on Twitter either: @PolycarpTCOJC

Tyndale House Publishers to Launch Revamped Web Site

Carol Stream, Ill.—Tyndale House Publishers today announced that it will launch its entirely revamped corporate Web site ( on Monday, February 1, 2010. With the virtual explosion of social networking communities available to consumers, Tyndale understood that a relatively static Web site featuring primarily one-way communication was not fully meeting the needs of its visitors. To satisfy the demand for a corporate Web site that would place a larger focus on harnessing external discussions and provide an ear for the voices of its customers, Tyndale felt it should enter into an interactive, multiple-platform dialogue. Development for the overhauled Web site began in June 2009 with the primary purpose of implementing an improved user experience.

“Tyndale’s role as a publisher has evolved from pushing content in a one-way conversation to a two-way conversation with our valued consumers,” said Debbie Johnson, Senior Advertising and Promotions Manager. “We’ve embraced the growing popularity of social media by cultivating a vibrant community that allows our authors, readers, and employees the ability to actively interact with each other.”

Many of Tyndale’s customers, authors, and retailers feature their own blogs, Web sites, social networking profiles, and other mediums that share interactions relating to Tyndale products. By continuing to present information without listening or reacting to these voices in a central forum, Tyndale was missing opportunities to showcase existing conversations. The new hopes to engage its consumers at a much more personal level.

Several of the new features of include:

  • Easier Navigation—The new Tyndale site takes a large departure from the look of the current site. Changes were made that allow much more content to be held on a page, while retaining a high level of organization.
  • Multimedia Content—It features video interviews, book trailers, audio podcasts, and a variety of other rich media content that Tyndale Web site users will have the ability to share on their Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook pages; via e-mail; and through a variety of other social networking outlets.
  • Product Reviews—It allows Tyndale to listen to its customers by encouraging product comments, hosting online book discussions, and highlighting book reviews from Tyndale’s existing community of bloggers.
  • Find Your Favorite Author on Twitter, Facebook, and Personal Blogs—By showcasing content from blog sites, Facebook pages, and Twitter feeds, Tyndale’s new Web site makes the communication tools of each consumer’s favorite author readily available.
  • Share Your Tyndale Story—It allows consumers the opportunity to share stories of lives that have been changed by Tyndale products.
  • Author Interview Calendar—It features an author interview calendar so that consumers may be notified when their favorite authors will be on national or local television or radio broadcasts.
  • Spanish Translation—Much of the text on the new site will also be available in Spanish.

Tyndale House Publishers was founded in 1962 by Dr. Kenneth N. Taylor as a means of publishing Living Letters and eventually The Living Bible.
